WE ARE AGENTS OF CHANGE We have worked since 1971 to serve the most vulnerable people on earth through purposeful relief and development. Our methodology is informed by our Christian beliefs that every person has intrinsic value and that it is our responsibility to advocate for the poor and the marginalized. Children are a barometer for a community’s success and well-being. We believe that when communities are trained and equipped to care for their most vulnerable, the entire community is lifted and poverty can be overcome. We serve communities like Galgallo’s through life-changing resources such as clean water, medical aid, food, equal educational opportunities to girls and boys, vocational training and empowerment in the midst of unimaginable hardships.

It’s not OK that failed crops, natural disasters and generations of inadequate farming practices are keeping communities from thriving when many rely on abundant harvests to support their families. FH works with local experts to support and train farmers in best practices for agricultural success. By implementing new techniques, communities are able to successfully grow enough produce and raise enough livestock to feed their families as well as earn additional income by selling the excess at the marketplace.  

It’s not OK that children are dying from preventable diseases. It’s not OK that families are spending their entire income on medical services or that access to quality healthcare is limited where they live. FH works with communities to restore physical health in children and families through training and educational workshops, by providing access to treatment and clean water sources as well as assisting families in implementing preventative measures to keep children healthy and safe.

It’s not OK that children remain in extreme poverty because they lack access to quality education. It’s not OK that children go through five or six years of primary school without learning how to read and do basic math. FH partners with caregivers, teachers, and communities to support children throughout their education and allow them to reach their God-given potential. EDUCATION CAPACITY STATEMENT  

It’s not OK that failing infrastructures and inadequate jobs keep vulnerable people in the generational cycle of poverty. FH works with local markets and economies to help restore communities by empowering them through vocational opportunities, training, and other sustainable and long-term solutions. FH also works with many communities to establish savings groups that enable families to save and borrow money to open a new business or improve their living conditions. DONATE A GOAT  

It’s not OK that entire communities lack a biblical worldview that crushes them under the weight of debilitating social issues and keeps them isolated from the hope they desperately need to seek out their God-given potential. FH works with communities to bring the love of Jesus in a culturally appropriate way by walking with families and students in relationship. FH trainings through community centers, after-school clubs and in home groups shift worldviews, help diminish violence against children and connect people to God’s love in profound ways. To help our field staff design and implement interventions, FH has identified three key strategies: ONE:
Design and implementation of development projects that address disaster risk reduction and resilience. Review current programming and future proposals for disaster risk reduction and resilience Consider existing plans and support projects in those plans that require outside support Integrate disaster risk reduction and resilience in the overarching country strategy TWO:
Increase community and household capacity for disaster risk reduction and resilience. Facilitate the developed plan with community leaders Help families create household level plans and activities that support the community plan. THREE:
Increase capacity of FH fields to respond to natural disasters and other emergencies, when the crisis surpasses the community’s ability to respond. Respond in alignment with disaster risk reduction and promote resilience in the midst of the crisis Varied response depending on the hazards, vulnerabilities, and context of the communities and households where FH is working.

HAITI REDUCTION OF MATERNAL AND CHILD MORTALITY Improve nutrition, hygiene and mother child health by training pregnant women and caregivers of children under five on behaviours that contribute to a reduction in high maternal and under-five mortality and morbidity rates in these communities. GUATEMALA REDUCING MALNUTRITION IN GUATEMALA The project will focus on reducing malnutrition in families with children under 5 years of age, pregnant women and children from 0 to 5 years old and voluntary mothers of cascade groups in three rural regions in the five departments in Guatemala with the highest poverty rates. BANGLADESH PROVISION OF PRIMARY HEALTH SERVICES FOR REFUGEES he project, in partnership with Medical Teams International, will improve the overall health status of Rohingya persons of concern, particularly women and children under 5 years, residing in Kutupalong Extension Camp through the delivery of essential, lifesaving quality primary health care services, mental health services, and sexual and reproductive health care. PERU PROJECT AGAINST FAMILY VIOLENCE Prevent family violence by strengthening children’s protection through promoting positive parenting guidelines within the family, preventative and resilient capacity in children, improving capacity of household savings, and strengthening community's preventative and organization capacity. MIDDLE EAST SYRIA AND MIDDLE EAST REFUGEE CRISIS Providing staff, technical support and other forms of capacity building and grants to local partners and church based groups. Key interventions are strengthening the local community based organizations and churches to provide critical aid through food, camp winterization, water and education for children as well as skill training for adults. PHILIPPINES IMPROVING RESILIENCY OF RURAL COMMUNITIES The project will improve the current evacuation options by the provision of appropriate shelters and regular evacuation drills done in close cooperation and training with responsible government agencies and the communities. STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY-BASED RESILIENCE Build the development capacity of two local organizations, PACIDA and Caritas Marsabit, to provide holistic and sustainable initiatives that promote community resilience. Pastoralist livelihoods will be enhanced in part through increasing livestock productivity through natural water point restoration and provision of community-level animal health services. EXTREME POVERTY   "As long as poverty, injustice and gross inequality exist in our world, none of us can truly rest."—  NELSON MANDELA Extreme poverty, absolute poverty or destitution, was originally defined by the United Nations in 1995 as “a condition characterized by severe deprivation of basic human needs, including food, safe drinking water, sanitation facilities, health, shelter, education and information. It depends not only on income but also on access to services.” Poverty is complex and nuanced with changing dynamics that cause people to live outside of their God-given potential. It stems from natural disasters, wars, harsh climates, government corruption, unfair trade policies, debilitating social issues, lack of access to resources needed to build a solid community foundation and endless other factors that continue the cycle of generational poverty. Here is a sobering look at extreme poverty in our world today:   More than 702 million people in the world live in extreme poverty, living on less than $1.90 a day. According to UNICEF, 22,000 children die each day due to the effects of poverty. An estimated 842,000 people die each year globally from diarrhea caused by unsafe drinking water, sanitation and hand hygiene. Two million children die from preventable diseases each year, such as diarrhea and pneumonia, because they cannot afford proper treatment. More than 750 million people lack access to clean drinking water. 805 million people worldwide do not have enough food to eat. 300 million are children. Every year, six million children die from malnutrition before their 5th birthday. Around the world, 114 million children do not get even a basic education and 584 million women are illiterate. Hunger is the number one cause of death in the world, killing more than HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. Our Approach We believe that poverty is complex and everchanging. We believe that ending poverty requires more than just providing raw resources. Our approach is holistic, meaning that we seek to end ALL forms of human poverty by addressing a person’s entire life. Our solutions for programmatic development address the physical, spiritual and relational needs of vulnerable people. We work towards a world without poverty through intentional and purposeful community development. Our approach allows us to partner with local leaders to develop transformative solutions, which are both sustainable and implemented at the hands of the communities themselves. We have four phases for community development that we believe create a foundation for resilience and self-sufficiency. We enter communities with the intention of graduating them in approximately 10-12 years. Our goal is to walk alongside communities so that they’re able to thrive once we leave. PHASE 1: DISCOVERY Food for the Hungry (FH) enters a community and seeks to walk with, listen, learn, assess potential risks and understand the needs and challenges of the people who live there, including how they impact the children. PHASE 2: GROWTH Along with community leaders and local governments, FH helps to develop a plan of action and begins to train and build-up teachers and community members to improve the lives of children through livelihood programs, educational structure, the provision of life-saving resources and planning for potential threats. PHASE 3: SUPPORT FH staff serve as mentors for the community members, helping them execute development projects, assisting where children are most impacted. FH staff walk with the community to implement solutions that tackle the communities’ biggest challenges in health, education, livelihoods, agriculture, spiritual development and disaster risk reduction practices. PHASE 4: FLOURISH FH begins to assess the success of programs by evaluating the positive impact on the children, while also creating a sense of ownership and independence. We’re beginning our preparations to exit the community. GRADUATION After walking through each phase with a community, we celebrate graduation and exit the community.

Disaster Response It’s not OK! It’s not OK that when an unforeseen disaster strikes, people living in extreme poverty are the ones who suffer most. They’re faced with unimaginable hardships, are left without the resources they need to rebuild their communities and often struggle for basic needs such as food and water. FH works with local governments, other NGO’s, and our exceptional emergency response team to bring restoration and hope to those affected by natural disasters or living amidst violence, war, famine and other crisis situations.   How we Serve During a Disaster When disaster strikes, lives depend on our ability to respond swiftly and efficiently. That’s why we always seek to respond to emergency situations in collaboration with strategic alliances and partners, such as the Integral Alliance.This allows us to be the most effective in our urgent response to disaster situations. When a disaster strikes in areas where Food for the Hungry works, our Emergency Response Unit is quick to respond and get on the ground in the affected area. We work with local partners to determine the most urgent needs, which are usually food distribution, access to clean water, infrastructure stabilization, safe spaces for children and medical aid.
